MOVING WITH PHYSIOTHERAPY
INTERNATIONAL PHYSIOTHERAPY DAY 2007
Dear fellow Physiotherapists
It is the aim of the Singapore Physiotherapy Association to help our nation’s citizens lead a healthy and
active lifestyle. The challenges that face us today are:
1. Desk bound related injuries such as neck, shoulder and back pain due to poor posture and long
hours of computer work.
2. Typical sedentary lifestyle with less than two thirds of our population involved in exercise 3
times a week. No surprise that the rate of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and
hyperlipidemia is on the rise.
3. A rapidly aging population that needs to maintain their health and mobility for work, sports
and quality of life.
Hence our theme this year on International Physiotherapy Day is “Moving with Physiotherapy”. As
Physiotherapists, it is our professional and clinical mission to enable people to maximize their physical
ability and potential for movement despite a sedentary and aging disposition. Traditionally we are
better recognised for our clinical skill to treat and restore function post injury. However more recently,
there is significant interest among physiotherapy professionals to be involved in the prevention of
injuries, diseases and disability through lifestyle improvement and education. Our goal is to help
people live richer and healthier lives through fitness and exercise. In other words, to endorse a lifestyle
of “movement”!
Over the month of September, Physiotherapists in Singapore will be organising various activities to
help start people moving with physiotherapy.
• A team of physiotherapists have been to Poi Cheng Primary School, in Tampines to get primary
school children exercising their spine, straightening their postures and re-looking at the way they
pack and carry their school bags.
• Various hospitals are conducting talks ranging from ergonomics to healthy lifestyle and guidance
to start exercising.
• KKH will be conducting a series of talks on ergonomics
• TTSH will be having a week-long Physiotherapy Awareness event which consist of health screening and
education program and exhibition as well as a week long Captain’s Ball Tournament. The
Physiotherapists have also taken the opportunity to reach out to the community by raising around $7000
for the TTSH community Charity Fund.
• Physiotherapists at SGH will be involved with a group of cycling enthusiasts to talk about good postures
and the benefits of cycling to raise the level of interest in cycling.
• NHC have put up posters to highlight the awareness of International Physiotherapy Day and may even
help raise funds for a patient’s cardiac prosthesis.
• Physios in NUH are conducting talsk on Incontinenece mangement, Tai Chi classes and Ergonomic
Talks to the Staff in NUH
• At the school of Physiotherapy, our students have arranged talks on physiotherapy career as well
as friendly games to get the adrenaline going and blow cholesterol cobwebs away.
In summary, as we look back over each year, it is gratifying that Physiotherapists in Singapore have
grown to be more skilled, more competent, more knowledgeable and more willing to get involved in
the health and care of our community.
We Physiotherapists have much to contribute to ensure the high quality of life among our fellow
Singaporeans with our professional expertise. And as each of us fulfil this mission within our
communities; let us do so with great distinction, competence and pride.
May I take this opportunity to wish one and all a very Happy Physiotherapy Day!
Dr Celia Tan
President, Singapore Physiotherapy Association
