Workshop 2

Building Relationships: The Art of Communication

Effective communication is associated with better clinical outcomes for patients who tend to adjust better psychologically and are more satisfied with their care (Maguire and Pitceathly, 2002). More importantly, the practice of mindful communication for physicians demonstrated evidence in enhancing empathy and person-centred care (Krasner et al, 2009 and Beckman et al, 2012).

In addition, there was also an improvement in physician well-being, increase in resilience and reduction in risk of burnout. As therapists, we need to continue to build on our skills in communication to enhance the quality of patient care and in part, to establish strong therapeutic relationships with our clients and other partners-in-care including caregivers and other healthcare professionals.

The workshop aims to provide the stepping stone for therapists

(i) to appreciate the importance of communication and what effective communication entails,

(ii) to learn about their relational style/s and

(iii) to learn how to apply relational style tools and appreciative inquiry to enhance communication.

The workshop comprises of interactive activities including group sharing and discussions to promote active learning among participants.

Ms Lee Sin Yi
Senior Physiotherapist, Tan Tock Seng Hospital
M App Geontology, B App Sc (Phty)

Sin Yi has close to 10 years of experience working extensively with older adults in the acute, subacute and community settings. Besides enjoying working with the geriatric population, she is passionate about education and professional development. Since April 2014, she has been part of the curriculum development team for the National Healthcare Group Interprofessional Leadership Program. In addition, Sin Yi is also part of the education taskforce of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Allied Health Services, involved in the strategic planning of the education directions of the Allied Health Professions. Her areas of interest in education include reflective practice, professional identity, interprofessional education and the use of humanities in healthcare professions education. Grooming younger mentors and students has always been a fulfilling and rewarding journey for her.


Ms Rachelle Lim
Principal Physiotherapist, Singapore General Hospital
M (Musculoskeletal) Physio, B Physio

Rachelle has more than 12 years of experience working in various musculoskeletal practice settings both locally and overseas in Australia. She is passionate about education; being actively involved in multiple coaching and teaching activities amongst the physiotherapists for more than 8 years. Rachelle has been the Program Director for the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Core Residency Program in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) since its inaugural start in 2014. Since completing the Pioneer Fellows program in 2013, she has been involved in various inter-professional educational activities within NUS Duke Academic Medicine Education Institute (AMEI).  Her areas of interest in education include Curriculum development as well as Teaching and Supporting Learners.


Ms Nadia Cheah
Senior Physiotherapist, Tan Tock Seng Hospital
BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy

Nadia has more than 5 years of experiences working in different settings involving patients with cardiopulmonary, neurological and geriatrics conditions in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Currently, she is working mostly with the geriatric population in the subacute settings. In the recent years, she is passionate about coaching and guiding physiotherapists and students in developing their clinical knowledge and reasoning. She has strong interest in cardiopulmonary conditions in the field of geriatrics , as well as reflective practice and it’s influence on the Physiotherapy profession. Nadia finds satisfaction in developing her knowledge on reflective practice and her clinical skills so as to guide the younger members of the profession, students and mentees alike.


Ms Foong Jing Wen
Principal Physiotherapist, Changi General Hospital
M Respiratory Physiotherapy, BSc Physiotherapy

Jing Wen specializes in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, working with the critically ill and also ambulatory patients for further exercise prescription. She has been part of the CGH Trauma Team and CGH Tracheostomy Team. Her current key clinical areas of interest would include patients within the critical care setting to self-management of chronic diseases in the outpatient area. Being a strong advocate of clinical teaching, she has developed educational programs for staff and students. In recent years, she has been instrumental in expanding into the area of simulation education – a key component of experiential learning. She enjoys being involved in journeying with staff and students in their clinical development.


Mr Derrick Tan
Physiotherapist, Tan Tock Seng Hospital
Diploma in Physiotherapy

Derrick has been working for more than a year in Tan Tock Seng Rehabilitation Centre where he has been exposed to both acute and subacute neurological cases, where he manages primarily clients with stroke. As a student, Derrick has been actively involved with the Singapore Physiotherapy Association. He has volunteered for many SPA events and has previously held the position of President in the Singapore Physiotherapy Association Student Council. He continues to have an interest in activities organized by the Singapore Physiotherapy Association, especially in the areas of student engagement and mentoring, where he hopes to contribute as a sub-committee member of the council.


Ms. Lee Siew Yee
Bachelor of Physiotherapy with Honors, University of South Australia
Master in Neurological Physiotherapy, University of Melbourne

Ms. Lee Siew Yee is a Senior Physiotherapist at the Tan Tock Seng Rehabilitation Centre. She is a certified Bobath therapist and ACSM exercise specialist, as well as a trained Lokomat user. Currently Ms. Lee is working in the brain injury rehabilitation team. Her other areas of interests include clinical education through supervision of students, workplace based learning and assessment, peer group teaching, and clinical research, of which to date, she has two publication in peer-reviewed journals. She also co-conducted serial casting workshop locally. Currently, Ms. Lee is part of the Education Committee in the Singapore Physiotherapy Association (SPA).
