Postgraduate Physiotherapy Training in Singapore

Learning objectives:

  1. Provide an overview of postgraduate physiotherapy training opportunities in Singapore.
  2. Detail the framework and objectives of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) Master of Clinical Research in Health Sciences (MClinRes Health Sciences)
  3. Describe the program overview of the SIT Master of Health Sciences (Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy)
  4. Outline features of the SGH Core Residency in Physiotherapy Programs 
  5. Relate the experience of postgraduate physiotherapy training in Singapore from the perspective of a student. 



Symposium Convenor: Associate Professor Muhammad Rahizan Zainuldin, Singapore Institute of Technology


Biography: A/Prof Muhammad Rahizan Zainuldin is the Program Lead of the new Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) with specialisations (to launch in September 2024). Prior to this role, he was the Chair of the Clinical Practice Education Committee, who leads the strategic direction of clinical practice operationally with stakeholders, such as MOH, healthcare clusters and other healthcare institutions. In his capacity as Chair, he led and continues to refine the implementation of a novel assessment, Entrustable Professional Activities, at most Allied Health clinical practice. He is currently serving as Member of the Curriculum Review Standing Committee, MOH.


Speaker:  Associate Professor Benjamin Soon, Singapore Institute of Technology

Topic Title: SIT Master of Clinical Research in Health Sciences (MClinRes Health Sciences)

Biography: A/Prof Benjamin Soon is the current programme lead for the Master and Doctor of Clinical Research in Health Sciences programme in SIT. He obtained his PhD from the University of Queensland (2014) and a Master of Manipulative Therapy from Curtin University (Perth, 2008). He is involved in the development of the undergraduate physiotherapy programme as the first programme director from 2016 to 2020. His research interest is in the area of rehabilitation technology, and he is also the IRB chairman since beginning of 2023.

Topic Title: SIT Master of Health Sciences (Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy)

Biography: Dr Audrey Lim completed her BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy – First Class in 1997 from King’s College, London and obtained her Masters in Sports Physiotherapy from the University of South Australia in 2002. In 2023, she completed her PhD from the University of Melbourne. Audrey entered the teaching profession in 2006 and is currently an academic at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). She is involved in the module development for the SIT Master of Health Sciences (Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy) and is currently coordinating the program. Her current research interests are in the areas of ethics and healthcare education.Postgraduate doctoral training in the private practice setting: A Singapore perspective.

Speaker:  Mr Kieron Phillips, Physiotherapist, Heartland Rehab & Singapore Institute of Technology

Topic Title: Postgraduate doctoral training in the private practice setting: A Singapore perspective.

Biography: After graduating with a first-class (Hons) degree in physiotherapy from Manchester Metropolitan University, Mr Kieron Phillips worked for the UK National Health Service before moving to Singapore in 2014. Mr Kieron Phillips has since worked in public and private practice settings gaining experience treating a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders. He holds an MSc in Musculoskeletal Sciences from University College London and is currently a doctoral candidate and clinical research fellow on the SIT industrial doctorate program. His professional and academic focus are on return to physical activity following shoulder surgery and he is currently investigating the role of psychosocial factors on exercise behaviours following rotator cuff repair. Outside of work, Mr Kieron Phillips is active in the wider community and has co-chaired the MSK special interest group of the SPA since 2017 as well as collaborating internationally on shoulder research projects.

Speaker:  Mr John Tan, Senior Principal Physiotherapist, Singapore General Hospital

Topic Title: Overview of SGH Core Residency in Physiotherapy Programs

Biography: Mr John Tan is a Senior Principal Physiotherapist at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He is the deputy chief of education in the Department of Physiotherapy and has served as Program Director of the SGH Core Residency in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Program since 2018. He has been appointed Associate Faculty at the Singapore Institute of Technology and currently serves as Vice-Chair of Rehabilitation Sciences at the SingHealth College of Allied Health, as well as Education Committee Chairperson at the Singapore Physiotherapy Association.
